Repost & Location Map: Instagram Is Radically Changing - Everything You Need to Know

Instagram, after years of stagnation in key features, is launching two game-changing tools that promise to completely revamp the user experience: the long-awaited Repost and a brand new Snap Map-style social location map. And the changes... don't stop there!
Repost: Finally share content with one click

Repost is now official on Instagram! Now, users can share Reels and other people's posts directly to their feed - with the original creator's name always visible. Each repost will be saved in a separate "Reposts" tab on your profile, just like it is on TikTok or X (formerly Twitter). Perfect for influencers and brands who want to showcase collaborations or UGC content.
Instagram Map: see where your friends are (if they want to)

Instagram is also testing a new map feature, heavily inspired by Snapchat Map, that allows users to share their location and activity with friends - only with their consent. The map is embedded in DMs, enhancing true location-based social interaction. The feature is opt-in with privacy settings that allow full control to each user.
Friends Tab on Reels: what your friends see, comment and like

To further enhance the social experience, Instagram is adding a new Friends tab to Reels. Here you can see Reels that your friends have interacted with - like, comment, repost - and you can start a direct conversation via DM. You can choose whether or not your activity is visible, for complete privacy.

Why are these changes happening now?
During a recent antitrust trial it was revealed that only 7% of Instagram activity is from friends, with the rest being mostly from creators and advertising content. Meta decided to switch to a more "social" strategy to boost interaction between friends and keep the audience active and engaged.
What does this mean for creators and brands?
- Greater reach through reposts - especially when followers repost your content.
- More users can find your content through the Friends tab in Reels.
- Possibility of local campaigns using the map function, e.g. event or location-based offers.
Instagram seems to be returning to its roots: social connection between people. While some see the new features as "copies" of Snapchat, TikTok and Twitter, they still offer new opportunities for communication, discovery and strategic content.
