Apple introduces a major security upgrade with iOS 18, which extends the Activation Lock feature to iPhone parts.

This feature aims to limit the sale and reuse of stolen parts from iPhones, such as screens, cameras and batteries.

Activation Lock links each accessory to the original owner's Apple account, rendering them useless if they're stolen. If a device detects a part from another phone with Lost Mode or Activation Lock enabled, the Apple account code will be requested to re-enable the part.

This move not only prevents the sale of stolen parts, but reinforces Apple's shift towards repair through certified channels. It is expected to strongly impact the used parts market and reduce the incidents of iPhone theft.

iOS 18 is expected to be officially released on September 16 and will be available for iPhone XR models and later. The Activation Lock feature for replacements is exclusive to iPhones, and is currently not supported on iPads with iPadOS 18.
