Since its inception, iOS has attracted many hacker groups who have tried to break the operating system code and add new features, apps and graphics.

These groups occasionally release the publications Jailbreak of iOS.

Two well-known jailbreak developers, the Chronic and the P0snixnja are leading a team that is dedicated to bringing security to iOS. The team of developers has come up with a platform called "Apollo.".

This platform is an official product of Sudo Security Group.

It is reasonable to ask yourself, who would be interested in such an application. Yes, security is important for all users, but can we trust a security app built by former jailbreakers?

The truth is that the known jailbreakers know better the iOS than anyone else, with the exception of Apple developers. Their involvement for so many years with jailbreaking has made them experts.

The "Apollo" application checks the security of a device, specifically some of the checks it makes are:

  • Leakage of valuable data.
  • Communication with blocked servers.
  • Use of pirate APIs.
  • Attempts to download from unsecure sources.
  • Suspicious application behaviour.

Of course, "Apollo" offers even more security for devices owned by enterprises. Some of the features it can add to iOS are the following:

  • Strict application control (Blacklist).
  • Lock devices at the level required by the user group.
  • Turn off system apps, such as the App Store and Messages.
  • Disable system features such as screenshot and data synchronization.
  • Web browsing filter.
  • Inability to remove "Apollo" even with DFU mode.
  • Ability to delete the contents at any time.

The level of "security" is reminiscent of Big Brother. One of Sudo Security's consultants claims that despite the continuous monitoring of the devices that have "Apollo" installed, the system administrator does not have access to the user's personal data.

We don't need to go into more technical details, this application has been created for large companies and will not appeal to ordinary users, mainly because the application for individuals does not offer so many functions, only a few controls.

One check that we found extremely useful is the following:

Every few days, a message appears on the screen requiring the user to use the touch IDto certify that he is the real owner of the device. If it is not the original owner, then the device remains locked.

This function would be extremely useful, especially if the owner's contact details were displayed on the device screen.

The application "Apollo." is expected to be released for large enterprises in 2016, we look forward to seeing what the publications for individuals and those for small and medium-sized enterprises will be able to offer.

As our devices become more and more important to our professional and personal lives, we start to think more seriously about the problem of security.
