Apple was today awarded a patent for a technology patent describing a circular display. The text of the patent refers to a wrist device as a possible embodiment of the display with many of the illustrations appearing to show a clock.

The patent is for a specific approach that has to do with handling the difficulties that circular screens have.

"The piexel layout is usually rectangular in shape. However, the rectangular arrangement of pixels may not fit effectively in a circular-shaped device. Circular-round displays have bottleneck areas where signal lines are crowded, leading to inefficient use of the display area. It would be ideal if it were possible to see improved displays such as round displays or other displays with curved corners."

The truth is that we've seen many Apple patents fail to materialize. These ideas include product ideas that the company has considered and rejected, which could be the interpretation of this idea as well.

"We know that Apple came up with this idea 8 months after the launch of the first Apple Watch, with Apple handing over the project to its engineers to work on. So, after all this time, we're not talking about an idea that was rejected but something feasible to implement from an engineering perspective that the Apple Watch could bring to market."

Of course, even the above does not indicate confidence in the company's plans. Apple may eventually scrap the idea later, or it could be a patent protection for other companies trying something similar, or it could be a technology reserved for other devices with curved angled screens like the iPhone.

Circular screens are inherently inadequate when compared to rectangular ones, especially in terms of the amount of useful data displayed on them. On the other hand, circular displays have their own audience that sees the issue purely aesthetically, so usable surface area is not the only factor that the company should consider.
