How to install Viber on mobile and PC and start free calls instantly.

Viber, or affectionately "Skype killer", is gaining ground. Do you have it on your mobile or PC? If not, follow our guide.

How many times have you not heard your friends say "download Viber to talk for free" but you always neglect it or don't understand the reason of getting another app on your mobile for chatting since you have free airtime in your plan. What is Viber and how to install it on mobile and PC?

• Viber is a free app for free calls, messaging and photos.
• It is available for PCs, Windows Phone, Android, Blackberry and iOS.
• Viber has over 1 billion registered users.
• All calls from Viber to Viber are free of charge but require an internet connection (Wi-Fi or 3G/4G).
• It is cross platform i.e. it does not matter if the call is made between different types of platforms e.g. if you call from iPhone to Samsung Galaxy the call will be made normally via Viber.

Viber Mobile installation

Click here to be taken to the Viber page on app store. Alternatively, for Android, click here.

• Press "Acquisition" and type your Apple ID password.
• After you've completed the Viber installation, you'll need to set up your account.
• Select Greece as the country and then enter your mobile phone number.

Your contacts will be synchronised immediately afterwards and all your friends who have Viber installed on their phone will appear in your Viber contact list.

You can now call them right away, send them a message or make a video call.

Viber Installation on PC

Go to on the Viber site and select the version "Desktop".

Download Setup and wait for the download to complete.

• Run the installation file.

• Wait for the installation to complete.

• You will be asked if you have Viber installed on your mobile phone. In the example, I selected Yes.

• You will be asked to scan the QR code via your mobile phone (on which you have Viber installed)

Your contacts are already in the app and you can start communicating with them.

Viber calls and video calls

After Viber installation, you'll want to talk to someone on your list to try the app. All you need is to call someone on your list who already has the app on their phone or computer. The quality of both calls and video calls is excellent and all you need is an internet connection (3/4G or Wi-Fi).

If you want to call landlines or someone who doesn't have Viber, you'll need to use Viber Out. The app allows you to charge money and buy credits for phone calls. Before you pay, you can find out the cost for each country.

Viber messages

Viber is a messaging app like any other. It offers possibilities to exchange sms, short audio files, photos and videos, the user's location and of course emoticons. In addition to free stickers there are also packs available for purchase at the price of 1.99 euros.

You can also send group messages to up to 100 people and even draw a doodle to send to someone. It may not sound impressive but it's a nice and fun addition to a conversation.

Public Viber chats

A Viber setup allows you to follow public conversations, except that it doesn't let you join in. There are public conversations of celebrities and brands (e.g. Disney) that are followed by many followers. The feature might become more interesting when participation is allowed and it's not just about following a conversation through the keyhole.

4 steps to safe Viber

As with all messaging apps, with the Viber setup, you need to make sure that everything you share is safe from prying eyes.

Change the online status

It may seem like a simple step, but you don't need your contacts to read your status. To hide it, go to Settings > Privacy > Share connection status and turn it off.

Hide the profile photo from unknown users.

Your profile photo helps your contacts to recognise you quickly and easily, but there's no reason for it to be exposed to strangers. Go to Settings > Privacy > View photo > View photo and turn off the option.

Delete Viber photos from your device

All the photos you've exchanged through the app are automatically saved in a new folder in your device's photos. So even if you lock the app, someone can still access your photos. Even if you delete them immediately, you can still access them through Viber.

Hide "Use application"

If you don't want people to see which Viber apps and games you're using, you can turn off App Use by going to Settings > Privacy > Privacy > "App usage" notification status.
